EAX-500 replaces old model EA-500.

The old model used a rim cylinder to activate alarm, the new model a mortise cylinder.

The unit is powered by a standard 9v battery.  It is a good idea to keep a backup on hand when power gets low.  The EAX-500 will emit a chirping sound when battery is low.

detex door tabA door tab is included in the box which mounts to the frame.  Mount the EAX-500 on the door near the tab.  When armed, the EAX-500 emits a magnetic field used to detect the tab.  Should the door be opened, the tab moves out of the field causing the alarm to sound.

A mortise cylinder is used to arm / disarm the unit.  The cylinder is sold separately since many buildings have their own set of cylinders.  We provide the option above to order the cylinder with the unit.  Should you want to provide your own cylinder use a standard 1-1/4'' mortise cylinder with a straight cam.

Mounting:

The standard method of mounting is on the door.  Mount the unit in the upper left or right corner of the door (lock side).  Then mount the frame tab to align near the center of the alarm.  Test the unit to ensure everyting is working.  Then replace the cover using the Detex key.

If you have a pair of doors you don't need to buy two units.  This does require some extra parts but they are cheap.  In this type of application, mount the alarm on the wall near the doors.  Magnetic door switches need to be mounted at the top of each door.  These switches are inexpensive surface mounted switches like the type you often see in home security systems.  Wires must then be run to the switches from the alarm.

A diagram for wiring is included in the installation instructions but here's the short version.  Run one wire from the alarm to the first switch.  Then continue that wire to the second switch.  Lastly, run a wire from the second switch back to the alarm.  The wires have then formed a loop from the alarm, to the switches, then back to the alarm.  When powered, the loop tells the alarm the doors are closed.  Should one door open the loop is broken and the alarm sounds.
